Robert Brückner Collection

Biographical History

Robert Brückner was born in 1913 in Baden bei Wien to a Jewish family. His parents were Bernard and Theresa Brücker (though his father was also married to a woman called Kamilla, the exact relative dates of the two marriages being unknown). He had four older siblings: Irma, Franz, Gertrude “Trude” and Ernst. After the Anschluss in 1938, Robert was imprisoned in Dachau. The family made applications to emigrate, highlighting their lack of means and contacts abroad, and seeking assistance from Jewish relief organisations. Several members of the family, including Robert, later immigrated to England in 1939. Irma was interned on the Isle of Man as an enemy alien in 1940, and was released in January 1941.
