Marie Malachowski Photographs: Jewish Relief Unit service
Biographical History
Marie Malachowski (14 May 1902 in Breslau (Wrocław) - 1999 in Toronto) was a British-Canadian teacher and social worker of Jewish-German origin. Born into an academic family, she trained as a nurse and worked in Kolberg (Kołobrzeg), Leipzig, and Berlin throughout the 1930s.
Marie immigrated to London in 1939, where she worked as a teacher. She joined the Jewish Committee for Relief Abroad (JCRA) and the Jewish Relief Unit (JRU) from 1947 to 1948, serving as JRU Senior Representative in the American occupation zone of post-war Germany. Later on she immigrated to Canada and resumed her career as a teacher.
Marie’s mother, Hedwig Malachowski (née Salomonsohn) (1872-1942), and her elder sister, Dr. Eva Malachowski (1900-1942), perished in the Holocaust.
Scope/Content
The photographs in this collection comprise personal snapshots by Marie Malachowski and professionally produced pictures. They capture scenes from Marie’s deployment to Bavaria as a field worker for the Jewish Relief Unit, and show among others her accommodation in the children’s DP Camp in Strüth (Ansbach) as well as the office setting and colleagues in her long-term placement in Munich-Pasing. Four images (1 to 4) seem to date to 1925 and depict Marie and another person by the sea.
