Photos of Buchenwald Inmates Liberated on a Death March
Scope/Content
Six photographs (images 1-6) show liberated inmates of the Buchenwald concentration camp in an open freight train. The men had been evacuated on a death march to Theresienstadt (Terezin) at the beginning of April 1945. After traveling for weeks, they were liberated shortly before their arrival. The images were taken by Karel Šanda, a Czech riot police officer from Leitmeritz (Litoměřice).
An additional picture (image 7) seems to come from a different provenance. It is currently unclear, when it was taken and what exactly it depicts. The handwritten abbreviation ‘L. G. M.’ on the verso most likely refers to Leonard G. Montefiore.
