Alison E. Wood Collection: Jewish Relief Work in Bergen-Belsen DP Camp
Biographical History
Alison Edith Wood (1913-2012) was a Christian social worker. Having worked with the Quakers at the beginning of her career, she assisted refugees from Czechoslovakia to the UK from 1938 on. During World War II, Wood got involved with the Jewish Committee for Relief Abroad (JCRA) and its operational arm, the Jewish Relief Unit (JRU). From 1945 to 1946, she served as personnel and welfare officer at the JRU headquarters in the British Zone of occupied Germany.

The photographs in this collection document the work of the Jewish Committee for Relief Abroad (JCRA) and the Jewish Relief Unit (JRU). They depict numerous staff members and work sites, mainly in the British Zone of occupied Germany, but also at the JCRA headquarters at 7 Endsleigh Place in London. The collection notably features the Displaced Persons (DP) Camp in Bergen-Belsen, with a particular focus on the medical facilities at its Glyn-Hughes Hospital.
